2023 DPHS Horseshoe Hunt

Rules
The annual horseshoe hunt takes place every year preceding Dan Patch Days. A horseshoe is hidden somewhere within the city of Savage, on public property. Clues are available on the Dan Patch Historical Society's website, in the Savage Pacer and at the Savage Library. The annual horseshoe hunt has taken place since 1996 and has always been sponsored by the Dan Patch Historical Society.
Rules:
1. Clues are given out each week that lead to the location of a special horseshoe hidden
somewhere on "public property" within the City of Savage boundaries.
2. Whoever finds the horseshoe and has a 2023 Dan Patch Days button wins $100.
3. The lucky winner also gets to keep the commemorative horseshoe.
2023 Dan Patch Days buttons are available at Savage City Hall and the Savage Library and the Historical Society booth @ Dan Patch Days.

Each Friday, clues for the horseshoe hunt will be available here by 9 p.m. on this web site (www.danpatch.com). This is the only place the clues will be available online. Clues will also be published in the Saturday print edition of the Savage Pacer newspaper.
To maintain the interest and integrity of the horseshoe hunt, the following members, spouses and minor children are NOT eligible to participate in the hunt: Dan Patch Historical Society board members, Dan Patch Days Inc. committee members and Savage Pacer newspaper employees. Also, there will not be any back-to-back winners.

Clue #1
‘Tis time once again for the hunt to begin.
As Dan a shoe he did lose.
It’ll take all ur brain, to discern where it’s lain.
With clues and button, it’s news.
Clue #2
By his mark of an X in '60,
Lincoln granted a plot quite nifty.
For cultivation, fencing & stabled,
Dan felt at home here and quite enabled.
Clue #3
By '30 the land thrice sold,
From TL to TK to EC.
The trek is one to behold,
Baptized in lore you would be!
Clue #4
Old man Kneasfey had a farm...
And on this farm there was a bench...
And on this bench was thus etched...
B & E, Oh my!
Clue #5 (was not needed)
Go west Cates may have said, and so sayeth I.
Down the path, go right, prize is nigh.

In a document from the Military Bounty Land Act of March 3, 1855, John McCann was
granted 160 acres in 1860. He signed with his mark of an X.
The document was approved and signed by president Abraham Lincoln.
The land was farmed. This clue draws one to the southwest portion of the city.
Clue #3
This park land changed hands from Thomas Loftus to Thos.
Knafsey to Earl Cates.
Trek is a synonym for journey, Journey Lane is near the park.
Baptized refers to the water of Cates Lake.
Clue #4
Knafsey, also spelled Kneasfey is referred to as "old man Kneasfey" in the Prior Lake
Spring Lake Watershed district website info on Cates Lake.
Cates lake was once known as Kneasfy's Lake.
While some addresses are listed as Prior Lake, the park is in Savage.
The park has a bench on the west side that overlooks the lake and has the initials B & E etched on it.

The shoe was mounted on some landscaping at the bottom of the path.
