What is the Dan Patch award?
|
Since 1966, one member of the 4-H horse project has been awarded the Dan Patch Award. The award is based on the individuals overall achievement, leadership, and service.
The first person to receive that award was Janis Brown Grundhofer of Benton County. She, along with winners from other projects, were awarded a trip to the 4-H club congress. Since that time (29) 4-H Horse Projects members have received that award and the unbelievable trip to Chicago. National scholarships were awarded to a select few by American Quarter Horse Association. Four representatives of Minnesota's Horse Project received national scholarships. The 4-H Club Congress in Chicago was eliminated from the National Program beginning in 1995.
In 1970 the family of the late Harold Savage of International Sugar Feed Company of Minneapolis provided the funds for the traveling plaque, known as the Dan Patch Award. The Plaque bears a picture of his father's famous pacer, Dan Patch, who set the world pacing record for the mile of 1:55 on September 8, 1906 at the Minnesota State Fair. The accompanying individual plaques have been sponsored by the family of Harold Savage, and the Ralph Larson family (all of Ralph and Ila Mac's (4) children were recipients). Annie Bucher and currently The Minnesota 4-H Horse Association. Since 2005 a Scholarship donated by Double-0- Farrier service, Cory "Ole" Olson has also been awarded to the Dan Patch award winner. |
